Project 6: Digital Toolbox

Image
Digital Toolbox Communication: Skype When thinking about the attributes of a global educator, Skype is an online technology that helps me to "flatten" the learning, encourage and model global citizenship, and design futuristic learning. Through Skype, my students can learn about and collaborate with students all over the world. The world has now become accessible to them and they have the opportunity to interact and learn from people they most likely would not have had the opportunity to learn from otherwise. Through these interactions, the students will gain knowledge of other cultures and empathy for the struggles that people may face around the world.  Community & Social Media: Twitter Twitter definitely helps me collaborate anywhere, anytime. I have grown both my professional learning network and my confidence through the Twitter chats I participated in. At the beginning of this course, I considered myself a " lurker "- someone who followed ...

Case Study 4- Peggy George & Wesley Fryer: The K12 Online Conferences

Image
Case Study 4 Peggy George & Wesley Fryer: The K12 Online Conferences  K12 Online Conference Peggy George and Wesley Fryer are two of the founders of The K12 Online C onference. The K12 Online Conference was a “free online conference open to anyone, organized by educators for educators around the world interested in integrating emerging technologies into classroom practice”. Though the K12 Online Conferences officially ended in 2017, the videos are archived for anyone to access on their website and Youtube channel . The most prevalent attribute of global educators that the K12 Online Conference demonstrates is the “use of online technologies”. One of the main goals of the conference is to allow educators to share ideas and best practices related to web 2.0 tools. It is the perfect opportunity for a global educator to learn about new technologies to use in order to bring learners together, publish global experiences, and encourage student interaction and collabor...

#EdTechChat and #FlipgridForAll Twitter Chats

Image
Twitter Chats #FlipgridForAll #EdTechChat Recently, I participated in two Twitter chats, the #EdTechChat (March 9) and #FlipgridForAll (April 8). I found these chats to be very relevant and helpful, as both focused on how to best implement distance learning as a result of COVID-19 school closures. #EdTechChat's focus was on the overall ideas of online learning (this chat happened early in the online-learning transition for some of the first districts to make the change) and #FlipgridForAll's focus was how to best use Flipgrid for both instruction and maintaining connections with students during online learning.  Similarities & Differences #EdTechChat and #FlipgridForAll were similar in the sense that they both focused on remote learning (what doesn't these days?). There were a few major differences between the two chats. The first is that I found #FlipgridForAll to be much faster-paced and active than #EdTechChat. This may be because the #EdTechChat occ...

Case Study 3: Tracey Winey

Image
Case Study 3 Global Educator Tracey Winey Tracey Winey Tracey Winey is a media specialist and STEM Integration Specialist at Preston Middle School in Colorado. She is also a co-founder of Engineering Brightness . She has a website ( Media Wine: Unexpected Possibilities ) and actively collaborates with colleagues through her Twitter account. Tracey Winey exhibits many attributes of a global education leader, but the attributes that stand out the most are “encourage and model global citizenship” and “design futuristic learning environments to connect with the world”. In Tracey’s One Million Lights project , her middle school students collaborated with a high school in Canada, a primary school in the United Kingdom, and schools in Uganda and the Dominican Republic. She made sure to emphasize that nothing about this project was an act of charity- every person involved in the project had a specific role and used their talents to accomplish a goal. This work shows that she is...

Workflow/Scheduling Tools & Collaboration/Co-Creation Tools

Image
Workflow/Scheduling Tools & Collaboration/Co-Creation Tools Google Calendar Google Calendar The workflow/scheduling tool I chose to research is Google Calendar. My school district uses Google Calendar to schedule meetings so I am already pretty familiar with the basics, but I learned about many new features I was unaware of while doing some additional research. It's impressive that Google Calendar allows you to add other people to meetings and set your available hours, but I think the most impressive feature is the "find a time" option. This allows you to check the availability of the other people you're requesting at your appointment, so you can find a time when everyone is available. This seems very efficient, so you don't have the back-and-forth of emails trying to find availability for all. I also like that you can include a Google Hangout Meet link to your Google Calendar appointment. Now that my district is completely online for the remainder o...

Case Study 2: Global Education Leader Cameron Paterson

Image
Cameron Paterson Case Study 2 Global Education Leader Cameron Paterson Cameron Paterson is the Mentor of Learning and Teaching at Shore School in North Sydney, Australia. He also works for Harvard and is co-editor of Flip the System Australia: What Matters in Education . He has a blog called “ It’s About Learning ” and a Twitter account , both of which he updates frequently. What attributes of a global education leader does this educator exemplify? Cameron exemplifies many of the attributes of a global education leader, but it seems the attribute he most demonstrates is the ability to design futuristic learning environments to connect students with the world. He shows this through his work in Harvard’s Project Zero Classroom , which helps teachers design engaging and exciting learning experiences for all learners. Cameron also conveys the importance of designing futuristic learning environments to connect with the world through his social media posts. On Twitter, he posted...

Communication Tools

Communication Tools Skype in the Classroom In this time of uncertainty around school closures due to COVID-19, discussing communication tools seems more relevant than ever. I have no doubt that an abundance of tools are being used for teachers and students to not only communicate, but to also help enhance student learning past simply substituting high-quality lessons with online worksheets. The tool I chose to explore is Skype. I have used Skype on a personal level, but hadn't considered using it for educational purposes. Skype has many useful features, but the ones I was most interested in are the ability to have an audio/visual conference with up to 50 people and also the ability to record any sessions. The ability to record and refer back to later seems like an especially useful tool for students who need additional time for processing or need the information presented in smaller chunks. If my district were to close for an extended length of time, I think I would like...
